Barcelona, September 29, 2021. Decathlon, the leading sports equipment distribution company in Spain, opens a new continental warehouse that has been built by CILSA, the company that manages the ZAL Port and is owned by the Port of Barcelona and Merlin Properties, located in the city of Barcelona, just 10 minutes from the airport and adjacent to the Port of Barcelona itself.

Both companies signed an agreement in December 2018 for the turnkey construction on the 167,751 m² plot BZ1 of the ZAL Port – Ciutat of a new 95,987 m² logistics warehouse, one of the largest and most sustainable in all of Spain, not only due to its size and location within the city of Barcelona itself, but because it will also be certified under the LEED standard with Platinum category, obtaining the highest qualification worldwide of the four existing in the world with this certification, thus responding to the highest environmental requirements.

Among others, photovoltaic panels have been installed for self-consumption, an integrated building management system to control artificial lighting by means of dimmable low-consumption LEDs with presence sensors, and construction materials that respect the carbon footprint have been used.

This warehouse is equipped with the most modern technology for logistics activity, consisting of 2 buildings of 46,610 m² each and 1 service building of 2,767 m² built, which includes the ground floor and first floor of offices, the connecting corridor between both warehouses and technical rooms. It has a general clear height of 11.30 m, 112 state-of-the-art springs with an automatic truck restraint system and 4 springs for unloading vans with automatic sectional doors and exterior shelters.

Marc Mata, director of the new Decathlon continental center has stated: “We are very proud to have a team of more than 325 collaborators, who have been the ones who have made it possible for us to start a project of this magnitude in record time. In addition, we have reinforced the team with 51 new hires, to which another 20 more logistics profiles will be added in the coming months ”.

The Logistics Transformation leader of Decathlon Spain, Daniel Mangas has pointed out: “The new continental center is one of Decathlon’s first steps within the important process of logistics transformation and its value chain until 2024, which we have started this year. This new project, added to the rest of internal processes, will allow us to be prepared for the new challenges and needs of the future ”. And he has concluded: “As for the facilities, within our firm commitment to carry out our activity in a sustainable way, for us it is an environmental guarantee to have a construction with these characteristics”.

On the other hand, Alfonso Martínez, general director of CILSA has indicated: “After these last 5 years where we have built almost 300,000 new m² of warehouses all certified with LEED Gold, investing more than € 200 M, this project of 95,987 m² represents a point of turning point for the ZAL Port, having completed its entire development. Our goal is to offer our clients the best logistics infrastructures, in reference locations, and with the highest environmental standards. For this reason, this new warehouse, unique in all of logistics Catalonia due to its location and its size, meets the standards of the highest certifications in sustainability: it has been developed according to the criteria of the LEED Platinum certification, obtaining the highest score of the four worldwide that currently have it. Being DECATHLON’s logistics infrastructure partner is a huge satisfaction and a professional challenge to be at the level of such an important and important client, making the need to continue growing into an obligation to respond to the needs of our clients. confirming ZAL Port as a benchmark in the logistics market of Barcelona ”.
