The Ministry of Commerce fixed the price of raw hides of sacrificial animals. However, the fixed rate is higher than last year. The decision was taken at a meeting held on Thursday (July 15, 2021) at the Ministry of Commerce to determine the price of leather.

This year, the price of salted raw hides for the capital has been fixed at Tk. 40-45 per sq ft cow and Tk.  33-37 outside Dhaka. Apart from this, the price of goat skin has been fixed at Tk 15 to 17 per square foot and goat skin at Tk. 12 to 14 per square foot.

However, at the beginning of the meeting, Commerce Secretary Mr. Tapan Kanti Ghosh proposed to fix the price of salted raw hides for Dhaka at Tk. 50 to 55 per square foot for Dhaka this year and Tk. 40 to 45 outside Dhaka. Apart from this, it is proposed to pay Tk. 20 to Tk. 22 per sq ft of goat skin and Tk. 15 to Tk. 17 per goat skin.

The leather owners present at the meeting disagreed with the price. They demanded an increase of Tk. 5 from the price fixed last year.

Towards the end of the meeting, after much discussion, in the face of traders’ demands, Commerce Minister Mr. Tipu Munshi announced a new price hike of Tk. 5 per sq ft for cow hides and Tk. 2 per sq ft for goats.
