JONIL, a footwear company in Felgueiras, which has been in business for 35 years and has 110 employees to develop its footwear, which is essentially aimed at international customers, has just seen its certified environmental management system.
Aware of the growing global concern with the environmental performance of the fashion industry and, in particular, of the footwear sector, JONIL has been investing in the improvement of its environmental practices. In order to systematize methodologies and respond more effectively to customer requests, the company, with the support of the CTCP, implemented the environmental management system, in accordance with the requirements of the NP EN ISO 14001:2015 and this was recently certified by the SGS entity.
“In a close teamwork between the CTCP and JONIL’s responsible for the Environment, it was possible to implement an environmental management system that actively involved the company’s employees and suppliers, who responded in a committed manner to the numerous environmental requirements and legal obligations, requests from clients” refers Joana Catarino, from CTCP.
JONIL’s Management hopes that “the commitment to certification of the environmental management system will contribute to the recognition by the brands of the company’s good environmental performance, even attracting new customers”.
Currently, the sustainability of its production activity is one of the pillars that guide the company’s strategy, in terms of the selection of materials, production methods and ways of controlling the environmental impact from the perspective of the life cycle of its products.
The environmental investment included improving the energy efficiency of the facilities, investing in water-based glues that are less hazardous to the environment, installing equipment that reduces the environmental impact of the use of solvents, and continuous control and monitoring of environmental aspects arising from the production of shoe.
In the short term, JONIL intends to invest in the reduction of greenhouse gases, through the installation of photovoltaic panels for the production of electricity, and will keep an eye on the best environmental technologies in order to continue to invest in improving the protection of the environment. and in minimizing its environmental impact.
