The government of Bangladesh has allowed five companies to export a total of one crore square feet of wet blue leather. The Office of the Chief Import-Export Controller, an agency under the Ministry of Commerce, has recently given permission to these companies to export leather.

Wet blue skin is the skin that is obtained after processing the skin first and then the fur from the body of the animal. Until 1990, such leather was exported from Bangladesh. Apart from this, ‘Crust’ and ‘Finished Leather’ have always been exported from Bangladesh to countries like China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Italy, Japan and Spain. However, there has been some collapse.

ASK Investment, Quader Leather Complex, Amin Tannery Limited, Leather Industries of Bangladesh Limited (Unit-2) and Kalam Brothers were allowed to export wet blue leather at this stage. The permit will be valid till June 30, 2022.

When asked, Commerce Secretary Mr. Tapan Kanti Ghosh said, “The decision was taken last time. But no one was interested then. This time 5 companies were allowed but there are more applications. They have been asked to submit the documents properly. The applications of the rest will also be evaluated positively after verification and selection. ‘

As a condition of permission, it is said that quality wet blue leather should be exported and export policy 2018-21 should be followed. At the end of shipping all the papers related to export have to be submitted. Exports must be made to the country to which the export is permitted, and the government may at any time prohibit the export of wet blue leather.

According to Commerce Ministry sources, the Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission last year recommended the export of wet blue leather to protect it from spoilage during Eid-ul-Adha. That recommendation was taken into account in making the decision.

Talking to ministry officials, it was known that the government has been facing an embarrassing situation with animal skins for three years after the holy Eid-ul-Adha. This is because tannery owners who process leather have not left enough money in the market to buy leather. They blamed the lack of bank loans for this. Meanwhile, many people buried their skins in the ground without getting any price.

According to the Department of Livestock, about 11 million animals are slaughtered in the country on Eid-ul-Adha. Of these, 40 to 45 lakh cows and buffaloes. Due to COVID, the amount of sacrifice may be reduced this time. The quality of skin is also very good as the cows slaughtered on Eid-ul-Adha are in good health. So the tanneries collect 50 percent of the total leather on Eid-ul-Adha.
